The Underground Realm of the God of the Sea

Imagine an Alghero fisherman who, on a calm sea day in the 18th century, notices a mysterious crevice at the base of the imposing Capo Caccia cliff. Driven by curiosity, he ventures inside and finds himself facing a breathtaking sight: a crystal-clear underground lake and majestic rock cathedrals sculpted over millions of years.

This is how, by pure chance, Neptune's Grotto (Grotte di Nettuno) was discovered. Today, it is one of the most spectacular and visited natural attractions not only in Sardinia but in the entire Mediterranean basin. A place so magical that, in the 1970s, it was even chosen as a movie set for the film "Island of the Fishmen" (L'isola degli uomini pesce).

Today this masterpiece of nature is accessible to everyone, but the adventure to reach it is almost as evocative as the cave itself.

How to Get There: Two paths, one marvel

The charm of Neptune's Grotto begins with the journey to reach it. You have two options, both unforgettable:

1. By Sea: The Ferry and the Dance of the Dolphins Departing comfortably from the port of Alghero, you can board the "Linea Grotte" ferries. The navigation sails along the beautiful Coral Riviera (Riviera del Corallo), offering a unique perspective on the sheer cliffs dropping into the sea. Keep your eyes peeled: in this stretch of sea, it is very common to spot dolphins playing in the waves! Please note: Ferries only depart in favorable weather conditions. In case of very rough seas, sea connections are suspended.

2. By Land: The Epic "Escala del Cabirol" If you don't suffer from vertigo and love challenges, you can drive to the Capo Caccia square and tackle the famous Escala del Cabirol (Roe Deer's Stairway). An incredible panoramic stairway of exactly 654 steps literally carved into the solid rock face of the cliff in 1954. Going down (and especially going back up!) this staircase suspended between sky and sea, with seagulls flying below you, is an adrenaline-pumping experience. Please note: If the sea is very rough and crashes violently against the entrance, the caves are closed completely for safety reasons, even for those arriving on foot.

What to See Inside

Once through the entrance, you will be greeted by Lake Lamarmora, one of the largest underground salt lakes in Europe, about 9 meters deep. The tourist path, about a kilometer long, will guide you through karst formations with fairy-tale names: the Acquasantiera (Holy Water Font - a monumental stalagmite that collects fresh water), the Sala delle Rovine (Room of Ruins), the Grande Organo (Great Organ), and the incredible Albero di Natale (Christmas Tree). The scenic lighting makes the atmosphere feel suspended in time, in a silence broken only by the dripping of water.

The Perfect Itinerary: Cave and a Dip in the National Park

To experience this at its best, logistical organization is key.

Starting from your Base Camp at Villa Malvasio, it will take you just 40 minutes by car along smooth and scenic roads to reach the Capo Caccia square, leaving the city behind.

Our advice for a perfect day? Book your cave visit in the morning (to avoid the heat while climbing back up the stairs). Once the excursion is over, don't just head straight back! Stop in the nearby Gulf of Porto Conte and treat yourself to a refreshing swim and lunch on Mugoni beach: a very long strip of white sand, protected from the winds and embraced by a dense pine forest, considered one of the pearls of the National Park. After a day of exploration, returning to the luxury of silence at Villa Malvasio will be the perfect crowning touch.

🎟️ Practical Info: Where to Buy Tickets

To access Neptune's Grotto, you need a ticket. Given the high attendance, buying online is highly recommended to speed up waiting times and avoid disappointment.
