Jeep, E-Bike or Catamaran? How to choose the perfect Asinara excursion (2026 Guide)

Undecided on how to visit Asinara? We compare 4x4 Jeeps, E-Bikes, and Catamarans. Find out which suits you (and where to see sea turtles).

You have decided to visit Asinara. Excellent choice! If you have already read our article on the Secret History of the Island between Prison and Quarantine, you already know that you are about to set foot in a unique, wild place charged with energy.

But now the practical doubt arises: how do I visit it? Asinara is large (over 50 km²) and you cannot tour it with your own car. You must choose the right "vehicle" based on your holiday style.

At Villa Malvasio, we see guests leaving every morning with different needs. Here is our honest guide to help you make the right choice.

1. E-Bike: For Free Spirits (and good legs) 🚲

Asinara by bike is a dream: absolute silence, scents of helichrysum, and the wind in your face. Who it's for: Young couples, sports enthusiasts, photography lovers.
** The "Pro" Tip:** Don't be a hero: rent an E-Bike (electric). The island is a continuous up-and-down, and the sun in May/June starts to beat down. With pedal assist, you enjoy the view without arriving exhausted.
The Limit: In one day, you will hardly see the whole island. You will enjoy the south and central part (Cala Reale) very well, but getting to the Punta Scorno lighthouse is a marathon.

2. 4x4 Jeep: For those who want to see EVERYTHING 🚙

If your goal is to say "I've seen it all," this is the only way. You rely on an authorized Park guide (Geologist or Nature Guide) who picks you up as soon as you get off the ferry.
Who it's for: Families with children, those who prefer comfort (there is air conditioning!), history buffs.
The advantage: You get everywhere. You will visit the furthest prison branches, the Austro-Hungarian ossuary, and the lighthouse in the North. Plus, the guides are mines of incredible stories about former inmates and nature.

3. By Sea: Catamaran or Fishing Tourism? ⛵

Here you change perspective. You don't see the island "from the inside," but "from the outside."

  • Sailing Catamaran: Pure relaxation. You sail silently, dive into "natural pools" (where the water is so turquoise it looks fake), and have lunch on board with typical products and Vermentino wine.
  • Fishing Tourism (Pescaturismo): You get on a real fishing boat. You see the fishermen pull up the nets and eat the very fresh catch cooked on board. It is an authentic experience, perfect for showing children where food comes from.

❤️ The Heart Stop: The C.R.A.M.A.

Whatever means you choose, try to make a stop at Cala Reale to visit the C.R.A.M.A. (Asinara Marine Animal Recovery Center). It is the hospital for Caretta Caretta Sea Turtles. Here they treat turtles injured by propellers or plastic before releasing them. Seeing these magnificent animals up close and supporting the volunteers is an emotion worth the trip.

🍔 The Food Dilemma: Villa Malvasio's Advice

As we have already said, restaurants on the island are few and the service is essential.

  • If you go by Boat: The problem is solved, lunch is included (and usually excellent!).
  • If you go by Jeep or Bike: Don't waste time queuing at bars. We advise our guests on the "Gourmet Picnic Strategy": before leaving Sassari, we will show you the best shops to have sandwiches prepared with real Sardinian porchetta, pecorino cheese, and pane guttiau. You will eat better, spend less, and do it with a sea view.

Your starting base

Whether you choose the dust of the Jeep or the wind of the Catamaran, the important thing is to start rested. From Villa Malvasio, the boarding point of Porto Torres is only 15 minutes away. No waking up at dawn, just a rich breakfast and off to the adventure.
