Birdwatching guide near Sassari. Where to photograph Purple Swamphens (Platamona), Flamingos, and Griffon Vultures. Stay at Villa Malvasio.

Sardinia is a biodiversity hotspot in the Mediterranean. For nature photographers, Villa Malvasio is the perfect base, located within 30 minutes of three distinct habitats.

1. Platamona Pond: The Purple Swamphen Kingdom Just minutes from Sassari, this freshwater lagoon offers wooden observation hides perfect for photographers.

Target Species: The iconic Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) with its metallic blue feathers and red beak. Also: Marsh Harrier, Purple Heron, and occasionally the Osprey.

2. Stagno di Pilo: The Pink Army Towards Stintino, the saltwater lagoons are home to the Greater Flamingo. The sunset light here creates incredible reflections.

Target Species: Flamingos, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet.

3. Capo Caccia Cliffs: The Griffon Vulture Look up towards the limestone cliffs of Alghero.

Target Species: The majestic Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) soaring on thermal currents. Also: Peregrine Falcon and Kestrel.

4. Inland Colors: Bee-eaters In the countryside around Sassari (April-May), you can spot the European Bee-eater, one of the most colorful birds in Europe, and the elusive Little Bustard.

Why Photographers choose Villa Malvasio: We understand that you carry expensive gear (long lenses, tripods).

  • Secure Parking: Private and gated parking inside the property ensures your equipment is safe.
  • Early Starts: We are close to the spots (10 mins to Platamona), so you can catch the "golden hour" at dawn.
