Imagine the scene: you have been dreaming of Sardinia for a whole year. You have booked a beautiful holiday home in Alghero, perhaps right in the heart of the historic center or overlooking the sea. You arrive full of expectations, ready to relax, but the reality that welcomes you is a cold shower that no online review had anticipated.
 

At Villa Malvasio, we often listen to the stories of those who, before discovering our property, stumbled into what is today the real plague of modern tourism: “cold” hospitality, managed by impersonal real estate agencies and ghost hosts who view clients merely as ATMs.

The Ghost Check-in and the Toilet Paper Emergency

The misadventure begins upon arrival. No owner to welcome you with a smile. To greet our protagonist family, there is an employee of a large property management company, a key delivery person perpetually in a hurry. He cannot point out a beach sheltered from the wind, he cannot recommend a good local pizzeria, and, worst of all, he does not even know the name of the house owner. Ten quick minutes, a signature, and he vanishes.
 

Entering the house, after a long journey, comes the first bitter discovery: there is not even a roll of toilet paper in the bathroom. The messages to the host begin. One, two, three. No response. The “Ghost Host” has collected the money and vanished into thin air, leaving the guests abandoned to themselves.

The Fridge Trap and Medicine at Risk

But the most serious detail, the one that marks the boundary between carelessness and dangerous negligence, involves the refrigerator.
 

It is understandable that a property asks you to turn off the air conditioning if you leave the windows open, to avoid unnecessary energy waste. But in this apartment in Alghero, the host had set up an extreme saving system: by removing the magnetic key card to leave the house, all the power was cut off, fridge included. The result? Every time the family went out to the beach or for dinner, the fridge turned off. Upon returning, not only was there no cold water, but the elderly mother traveling with them risked ruining her life-saving medicine that required low-temperature storage. An unacceptable risk, dictated solely by the stinginess of wanting to save a few cents on electricity, hiding behind the notorious hidden costs on vacation.

The Myth of the “House by the Sea” and Sleepless Nights

To top off this nightmare, there is the false myth of the perfect location. Having a house in the heart of Alghero’s historic center or directly on the seafront seems like a dream, until night falls.
 

The bars below the house start pumping music until 4 in the morning, the noise echoes through the alleys, and resting becomes impossible.
