A Stone Enigma in the Heart of Porto Torres
North-western Sardinia never ceases to amaze. Moving towards the coast, in Porto Torres, stands the Basilica of Saints Gavino, Proto, and Gianuario: the largest Romanesque church on the entire island and an architectural masterpiece shrouded in mystery. Built in the first half of the 11th century on the Monte Agellu hill (an ancient Roman necropolis), this imposing structure holds an absolute record: it is the only church in Italy designed with two facing (opposite) apses. If you stand in front of what should be the main "facade" facing the street, you will immediately notice an anomaly: there is no main front door! Access, in fact, is from the long sides of the nave, featuring the magnificent Gothic-Catalan twin portal on the south side (the Holy Door).
Between Curses and Blessed Rain
Approaching the ancient outer walls, the Basilica reveals its nature as a "book of stone". The walls are literally covered with engravings left over the centuries by stonemasons and pilgrims. Among these funerary epigraphs, one on the north side always captures attention: dated 1211 and written in Latin, it is a real curse cast against anyone who dared to violate the burial. But why the frenzy to be buried right against these walls? Legend has it that the rain, sliding off and touching the sacred roof of the Basilica, automatically blessed the ground it fell upon. Being buried in that perimeter (now known as Atrio Metropoli) meant resting for eternity in a land constantly purified by holy water from the sky.
The Crypt and the Places of Martyrdom
The interior, divided into three large naves by salvaged Roman columns, is solemn. But the true spiritual heart of the complex is found by going down the stairs. In the 17th century, a fascinating underground crypt was built to house the relics of the Turritan Martyrs (Gavino, Proto, and Gianuario), killed in 303 AD during the persecutions of Diocletian. Here, in addition to Baroque statues, you can admire splendid Roman sarcophagi and the remains of ancient funerary monuments from the 4th century.

Furthermore, if you love complete itineraries, we recommend booking (at least 48 hours in advance) a visit to the coastal churches closely linked to the life and martyrdom of the three saints: the Church of San Gavino a Mare (known as Balai Vicino) and the Church of Balai Lontano, located on spectacular cliffs overlooking the sea.
