Beyond Neptune’s Grotto lies an emerald green underground realm, inhabited 8,000 years ago. Guide to Alghero’s Grotta Verde, tickets, and tips

The Secret Guarded in the Cliffs of Alghero

If you have already visited or read our complete guide to the legendary Neptune's Grotto, you know well how much the Capo Caccia promontory in Alghero is a treasure chest of natural wonders. Yet, just a short distance from the endless back-and-forth of tourists on the Escala del Cabirol, hides a second underground realm, decidedly less famous but equally magnetic: the Grotta Verde (Green Cave, historically also known as the Cave of the Altar).

While Neptune's Grotto develops horizontally, almost caressing the sea level, the Grotta Verde defies gravity. The access is perched at a height of 75 meters on the cliff and, through an evocative entrance stairway, penetrates a deep gallery that plunges straight down almost to touch the water.

An Emerald Lake and a Mediterranean Unicum

Entering the Grotta Verde means taking a leap back in time 200 million years, among monumental limestone rocks and colossal stalactites and stalagmites reaching 12 meters in height. What makes this place unique in the world, however, are two extraordinary details:

  • The Greenish Light: At the bottom of the cave emerges a small lake of brackish water. The dim external light, filtering inside and reflecting on the water's surface, creates a natural illumination with emerald green hues that envelops the environment in a mystical atmosphere.
  • A Biological Treasure: It is the only place in the entire Mediterranean basin where a very rare colonial madreporarian is preserved, the ancestral biological structure from which coral reefs originate.

Cradle of Sardinian Prehistory

The Grotta Verde is not only a geological spectacle but an archaeological site of primary importance for all of Sardinia. About eight thousand years ago, in the Early Neolithic (6th millennium BC), this cave was a lived-in place, a temple of worship, and a sacred cemetery.

The rocky walls preserve precious rock graffiti left by primitive men, while the underwater excavation campaigns in the internal lake have yielded intact burials and funerary goods with decorated and red-painted ceramics. A place steeped in millennial sacredness, protected by the wild embrace of the Porto Conte Park.

The Insider’s Tip: How to Book and the Perfect Itinerary

For many years this cave remained closed to the public and accessible only to expert speleologists. Today, fortunately, it can be visited, but the management is very strict to preserve the delicate ecosystem.

The visit has a limited capacity (maximum 30 people per shift), lasts one hour in total (with 40 minutes spent inside), and is accompanied by an audio guide in Italian or English. Shifts leave every hour every day from 9:00 to 18:00 (with a break from 13:00 to 14:00).

How to buy tickets: The cost of a full ticket is 14€ (including the other attractions of the Porto Conte Park) or only 6€ if you already have the Alghero Ticket. It is essential to buy the ticket and secure your time slot in advance.

You can do this directly online on the official website of Alghero Parks - Grotta Verde or by downloading the official App of the Ecomuseum.

💡 Our exclusive tip: After walking among the underground mysteries of the Grotta Verde or the majestic halls of Neptune's Grotto, the best way to cool off and metabolize so much beauty is to treat yourself to a regenerating swim in Porto Conte. We suggest heading straight for Mugoni Beach: an expanse of fine sand protected by a thick pine forest, where the water is always calm, clear, and warm, ideal for an afternoon of total relaxation.
