Renting a Car in Sardinia: 5 Traps to Avoid to Save Your Vacation (2027 Guide)

Exploring Sardinia by car is a magnificent experience, but renting a vehicle can hide pitfalls that risk draining your budget and turning relaxation into pure stress.
As hosts at Villa Malvasio, we see tourists arriving every day. Treasuring the countless misadventures our guests shared with us during this last summer season, we have decided to compile this ultimate guide. If you are planning your holidays for the 2027 season, here is our local advice to rent a car in total safety.
1. The Seasonality Trap and the Overbooking Nightmare
If rates are advantageous in winter, prices skyrocket in July and August. This summer we witnessed an alarming phenomenon: tourists literally left stranded. In August, due to breakdowns or accidents, fleets shrink drastically. It increasingly happens that even major companies find themselves in "overbooking," unable to deliver the vehicle despite the customer having prepaid months in advance. The tip: For 2027, book well in advance with cancellation policies and go straight to the rental desk as soon as you land.
2. Damages, Tow Trucks, and the Vital "Kasko" Insurance
Saving on basic insurance is the most expensive mistake you can make. Our coastal dirt roads put vehicles to the test. We always suggest getting full coverage (Kasko) insurance. During this season, one of our guests faced an absurd situation: they rented a brand-new car which broke down due to a factory battery defect. Without roadside assistance included, the client had to pay for the expensive tow truck out of pocket!
3. Thefts and Fines: The Danger of Historic Centers
- Thefts: Again this year, several thefts from rental cars occurred in the Alghero area. Never leave luggage or backpacks in plain sight. If they smash your window and you don't have full coverage, you pay.
- Fines and Hidden Costs: Avoid driving into the historic centers of Sassari or Alghero. Besides the risk of getting lost in ZTLs (Limited Traffic Zones), there is a further mockery: if you get a ticket, the rental company will charge a "management fee" (around €35-€50) directly to your credit card, on top of the fine!
4. The Dirty Car Penalty
Most beautiful Sardinian beaches are reached via dusty roads. If you return the car excessively dirty, rental companies apply steep cleaning penalties. The trick: Wash it before returning it to the airport. Minutes away from Villa Malvasio, there are excellent, cheap automatic car washes.
5. Night Parking: Choose Your "Base Camp" Wisely
The most important tip concerns where you will sleep. Tourists are often lured by cheap B&Bs in the historic centers without considering logistics. Historic centers lack parking, and leaving a car on the street overnight puts it at high risk of scratches, broken mirrors, or vandalism. Waking up to a damaged rental car is the worst way to end a vacation.
By choosing Villa Malvasio, you eliminate the problem. We offer a large, fenced, and totally secure internal parking lot. Your rental car (and your luggage) will sleep protected on our property, and you can enjoy your rest in absolute peace.
