Who said Sardinia is only about the sea? If you look up at the hills and headlands of the North-West of the island, you will discover a landscape marked by ancient fortresses, towers, and crenellated walls.
Between the 12th and 14th centuries, this part of Sardinia was the stage for a real "chess match" between two very powerful families arriving from the continent: the Doria (powerful Genoese merchants) and the Malaspina. To control the territory, naval routes, and fertile valleys, these families built a network of spectacular castles.
Today, those fortresses are unmissable destinations for those who love history, landscape photography, and breathtaking views. By staying at Villa Malvasio, you are in the perfect strategic position to explore them all. Here is our itinerary to discover the 5 most fascinating medieval castles in the area.
The Two Intact Giants: Castelsardo and Bosa
1. The Doria Castle (Castelsardo) Overlooking the Gulf of Asinara, the village of Castelsardo is considered one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy". Its castle, built by the Doria family in the 12th century (when the city was called Castelgenovese), has reached us in excellent condition and houses the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving.
- Villa Malvasio's tip: Entry is subject to a fee (very affordable). After admiring the view from the walls, walk down the alleys of the village perched over the sea to visit the spectacular Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate, recognizable by its bell tower with a colorful majolica dome.
🚗 Distance from Villa Malvasio: About 45 minutes by car.
2. The Castle of Serravalle or Malaspina (Bosa) If the Doria dominated the north, the Malaspina controlled the south of our territory. In Bosa, one of the most romantic river villages in Italy, stands the imposing Castle of Serravalle, built in 1112 on the hill overlooking the Temo river.
- Villa Malvasio's tip: To reach it you will have to walk up the narrow stairways of the colorful historic district of Sa Costa. Inside the walls (entry fee required) is the church of Nostra Signora de Sos Regnos Altos, with an incredible cycle of medieval frescoes.
🚗 Distance from Villa Malvasio: About 1 hour by car along the coastal road.
The Hidden Pearls for Photography Lovers
Besides the two giants, there are three fortresses perfect for those looking for wild places and 360-degree views.
3. The Ruins of the Malaspina Castle (Osilo) At about 600 meters above sea level, this castle was the Malaspina's eye over the entire territory. Access to the tower is sometimes limited (we advise you to call the Municipality of Osilo), but the surrounding area is a photographer's paradise. From here you dominate the entire Gulf of Asinara: on clear days you can clearly see the Island of Asinara and, if you are lucky, even the coast of Corsica!
- Villa Malvasio's Secret: Osilo is famous not only for its castle but also for its cheese. Read our article dedicated to Pecorino di Osilo and how to taste it. Furthermore, only for our guests, we offer an exclusive experience: ask us in private and we will put you directly in contact with the shepherd's company to buy the award-winning pecorino at the source!
🚗 Distance from Villa Malvasio: About 25 minutes by car.
4. The Doria Castle (Monteleone Rocca Doria) A tiny and delightful village, built on a rocky "peak" (a rocca, indeed) that dominates the surrounding landscape. Here the Doria built a castle in an impregnable strategic position.
- Villa Malvasio's tip: Today only a few ruins remain, but a walk in the village and along the edges of the rock will give you the chance to take incredible photos from above of the picturesque Lake Temo below. The late afternoon light here is pure magic.
🚗 Distance from Villa Malvasio: About 45 minutes by car.
5. The Doria Castle of San Matteo (Chiaramonti) Built to counter the Malaspina of Osilo, this ruin with a romantic and decadent charm dominates the village of Chiaramonti from the top of a limestone hill.
- Villa Malvasio's tip: Access to the ruins is free and open (pay attention to where you step). The climb will reward you with a spectacular view of the soft hills of the historic Anglona region, far from the classic tourist circuits.
🚗 Distance from Villa Malvasio: About 40 minutes by car.
